Angel of Mercy

Released, free to go and join the world,

The haggard prisoner remains dumbfounded

Trapped in a fear cell of his own creation.

The doors lifted from their rusting hinges,

The walls long since crumbled to dust –

And still he waits.

“Ignore the world outside

And stay safe here.”

Or so he makes himself believe.

Then she arrives and stands before him,

Eyes shimmering in the heat of daylight.

Smiles as if to an old friend,

Holds out her hand and leads him home.
