Hero – Cinematography Good Enough To Eat

Just watched the movie Hero again, directed by Zhang Yimou.  It is possibly the must lush and vibrant cinematography (Director of Photography Christopher Doyle) I have ever seen.  Every vista is so delicious it seems like you could reach out and grab a piece.

Is there anything as kinetically beautiful as the confrontation between Maggie Cheung and Zhang Ziyi?

Or how about the ballet-like water battle between Jet Li and Tony Leung?

And then there is the sumptuous and symbolic use of color to represent each iteration of the story.

Sometimes, a movie speaks to you on a very fundamental level.  This movie speaks to me differently every time I see it.  Today, it was just a wave of awe at the sheer beauty of it all.  And I believe Tony Leung and Michelle Cheung are the most radiant and passionate film couple I have ever seen.

If you have not seen this film, please do yourself a favor… and see it with subtitles!
