My basic political beliefs follow:
Government is in place to provide not only vital services, but also to maintain services which contribute to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all citizens. I believe this begins with supporting the most vulnerable in our society: children, people living with disabilities, those currently living below the poverty level, and the elderly. This includes complete access to health care for all citizens, maintenance of Social Security with NO borrowing from the fund for other uses, free and comprehensive public-funded education for all citizens, equitable and fair taxation to support the function of the government, and a foreign policy that respects the value of all human beings.
In future posts, I will address each of these parts of my political beliefs in detail. I am putting this out in an open forum because I believe that a reasonable exchange of ideas, even on an individual level, will improve the political climate in our nation. Currently we are faced with two parties whose intractable positions have resulted in a lack of any real progress on addressing the basic issues of need that exist in the United States and the world-at-large. Instead, the unfair influence of corporations, lobbyists and moneyed interests have effectively pushed the voices of average citizens out of the political arena. As this country was founded on the basic proposition that the government exists by the will of the people, I see this development as a perversion of the fundamental values of the country we call home.
There will most certainly be disagreement on what is posted here, and that is a good thing. This country was born out of debate. Therefore, I encourage comments and will do my best to reply to any comments made.
